today in class we talked about roman government and todays government in the USA. they are both fairly similar and have three branches (judicial, legislative, and executive). they also have a list of rules (roman had the 12 tablets and USA has the bill of rights)
Monday, May 4, 2015
5-4-15
- fifth century BCE - patrician dominance of the government was challenged by the plebs (“people”)
- plebs were 98% of the population
- how did the patricians dominate?
- plebs had to serve in the army, but could not hold office
- plebs were threatened with debt slavery
- plebs had no legal rights
- plebs refused to serve in the military until…
- tribunes (“tribal leaders”) were elected
- these laws (on tablets) were posted in public (in 450 BCE)
- laws were written out (The Law of the Twelve Tables)
- originally, the US modeled their new government on the model used by the ancient Romans
- is it exactly the same? not quite…
- but both have three branches of government... executive, legislative, judicial and both have a legal code

today in class we revisited some topics of Greece and went over some new things. some of the new things we went over was Greeks geography and how that affected their culture. since the land was so mountainous, it caused many things. 1 it caused them to become great sailors and ship builders, 2 it made different civilizations not use to each other (causing many enemies and few friends on the battle field) and 3 it made them have to sail to trade within their own country. another thing we went over today is homer ( a blind, old, greek story teller). this man was very talented with story telling and told stories about greek gods and goddesses. one of his most famous stories was called odyssey.

cyber day/ 3-6-5
The ancient geek philosopher i chose is Aristotle. this man was very important in ancient times and did man things. for one, he tough alexander the great (who was extremely wealthy) and he gave him access to the lyceum. he lived to be about 82 which is pretty long for a guy of that time period. some of his main ideas during his time Golden mean, Aristotelian logic, Syllogism, Hexis, Hylomorphism, and the Theory of the soul. during his life he interacted with plato, another greek philosopher. he thought of another element known as Aether (which would aslo go along with earth, air, fire, and water). this 5th element had to do with heaven and it was a divine substance. he was also involved with the 4 causes and the second person to have an idea/plan with optics.

cyber day/ 3-2-15
Greece is the word cyber homework
all of the worlds great civilizations occurred and were located around rivers
Mesopotamia had the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers
Egypt had the Nile River
India had Indus River
China had the Huang He River
the significance of Greece's location is that it is right by the water. so instead of having just a river for its water, it has an entire sea. Greece also seems to be in the form of a peninsula so that means it has water on 3 sides of it. the topography of it seems like it is pretty high up and goes up at a very high rate from the water. it looks as if it has a lot of mountains as well. Greece as a lot of good surroundings. Greece has a sea to the left, right, and below it. Greece has islands all around it that has great use for fishing. Greece has mountains above it and i do not know what the mountains do for the civilization. all of these things would affect their culture by influencing the way they have to live by the things surrounding them. there is a lot of water near them, the greeks will probably have to fish and know how to do it well.
the Aegean sea and the Adriatic sea surround the civilization. south/ southeast of Greece is an island called Crete. Athens and Sparta are relatively close to each other, but are separated by body of water (part of the Aegean sea).

today we took the quiz on Egypt. my shadow took the test and Mr. Shick said if he got a 100% as a shadow, that he would give him 1000 dollars cash. i hope that he takes the right guesses and receives 1000 dollars from a teacher he has never seen before. i thought the test wasn't that to hard but ik i didn't get a 100 because some of the questions were a bit challenging. The last class's average grade was a 74% so i am sort of scared but if i get a good grade it could pull my grade up to a higher B and maybe even an A at some point.

i hate this game and will never play it again. i have tried to complete this about 50 times and didn't complete it till 9 pm. with all of this effort a 70% is pretty demoting and will pull my grade down a bit. if you reconsider and make it anything higher i will start to cry in your class so when you ask me if i'm crying i will be the first person to cry in your class this semester. i have also become alot better at recognozing what it takes to create a pyramid, and how to steer a boat with the A, Z, N, and M keys on the key board

mondays class work
at one point all the pyramids were perfectly straight. there were multiple chambers within the pyramids. there was air vents in the pyramid. the great pyramid was the tallest building for over 3800 years. the Egyptian civilization was around for 2000+ years. the nile made it really easy to create crops. in fact the nile area they just threw seeds down and let their animals walk on it to plant them. the nile was very easy to irrigate. from the nile they created sail boats. there were three main times of Egypt. there was the old, middle and new kingdom. the pharaohs were expected to act like gods. Ra was a main central god. Egypt split up a little and created nubia and Egypt. the other main god for nubia was Oman and together they morphed into one and created OmanRa. the new kingdom was a time of war and expansion of the land. when mummifying somebody, their main organs were removed. the body was next covered with salt and was left their for about 40 days to get rid of the moisture. oils were then rubbed on the body. thicker layers were put on the body then the body was wrapped. the body was then put on wooden board, then he was wrapped onto the board. a pouch was then placed on the chest. mummified Ibus were placed on the chest. they were wrapped on to the body, then was secured down father by bands horizontal to the body. a painting of their face was then out on the body and was strapped down by more bands. linon was then wrapped over top of that. the linon was died red and a hole was cut out where the painting of the Pharaohs face was. paintings were then put on top of the cloth and his name was inscribed at the feet.

cyber day work
(clock/time) I
believe the most important of the five things I have chose is the clock. Having
a set standard time system allows them to advance much more as a civilization. they divided their days into hour like parts called obelisks. their clock used the motion of the sun or water to divide their days. by creating a form of time in whatever way they did choose to do it, created more organization throughout the land.
(farming) secondly i think their use of irrigation when it flooded was very important to the people of Egypt. with the new technology in their life, they created a way to farm all year round (even during the flooding season). the technology they created was called a shaduf. it was a cross pole that was attached to a post in the ground. one end had a container attached , the other had a counter weight. when it flooded, the container was filled with the flood water from a channel before being raised up by the counter weight and swung where to the farmer wanted the access water to go.
(medicine) third, i think their advancements in technology was important to their culture. with these advancements, they are able to find out when people had medical illnesses. they were also able to find some treatments for these illnesses. they did this through just being educated mostly. with all the extra food going around, they were able to make these advancements such as surgery and things to take when they have certain illnesses.
(writing) 4th i picked writing. the form of writing they had in their time was called hieroglyphs. by creating this form of writing, they were able to keep track of mostly everything. by keeping track of things, it allowed them to advance in even more things.
(astronomy) 5th and probably least important in advancing their civilization there was astronomy. the one thing this did was help with was creating a calendar. the calendar and astronomy showed to them that their was about 365 days in a year and is divided into about 12 months. all this did was help keep track of things even more.

not enjoying the snow day with the upcoming try outs and stuck inside until them. but with his time i will be able to complete my first cyber day home work. with the social classes, next up after the scribes that wrote in hieroglyphics, there were the soldiers. these men used wooden weapons (bow and arrows along with spears) with bronze tips on the end. occasionally they would ride chariots. after them there was the white kilt class or upper class. then the religious and political leaders and lastly the pharaoh. these men were both political and religious leaders. they were in charge of ALL of Egypt and collected taxes, made laws, and defended Egypt from foreigners. Hatshepsut was a women who served as a pharaoh. Cleopatra VII was also a woman Pharaoh. there were over 2000 gods and goddesses, and they controled the lives of the humans. RA was the god of creation and the sun, there was another god from nubia (more south of the river) named OMAN, which translates to the english word hidden. over time they combine OMAN and RA to make OMANRA.

today we started the class doing nothing really. i watched a video on Brodie smith and frisbee shots. they are some great videos check him out! after that we finished our video and talked about test questions. we will be having our test on monday. to study i will review the notes i took through out the video. he says it will be a fairly good test so i think i will do good again. last test i got a B so now i will try to get an A on this one. one main topic to focus on is how some cultures have gotten more advanced then others. i also need to focus on the details of the food and locations effects on a growing civilization.

today we watched the video again and jared diamond explained what he thought made some races superior to others.he believed that farming was the key to a more advanced civilization. if you had the better crops that naturally grew in your area then you would probably be more advanced civilization. this explains the difference between new guinea and america. in new guinea, they had little to no crops growing in their area and if they did have a crop, it was not very filling ad low on protein and calories. since they had to spend a majority of their time on finding food, they had no time to work on other things. meanwhile, america had the best crops around the globe, so when people started to make civilizations there they had more then enough food. this allowed them to be more advanced in other things. he also touched base on domestic animals. there are 14 total animals in this world that are over 100 lbs and have been domesticated by humans. most of these have other great resources produced before they are killed for their meat.
Monday, February 2, 2015
2-2-15
today we watched a video on jared diamond called "guns, germs, and steel". this video is about the evolution of humans and how technology advances through time. the people of new guinea still live a very basic life that involves a lot of hunting and gathering. they compare them to the average citizen of new york and notice that the new yorkers have a lot more "cargo". because they have cargo, the people of new guinea automatically put them in charge and almost worship them. this leads people to believe that the white folk are just naturally in charge and have power, and the people of new guinea believe that because the amount of cargo they have. jared diamond is trying to unproved that thought because he believes otherwise.
